About the event
Kailasa USA Nithyanandeshwara Hindu Temple is celebrating Makara Sankaranti on January 14th, 2026
Makara Sankaranti, also known as Pongal, is the day when the Sun, Bhagavan Shiva Surya, enters the Makara Rashi. This event signifies the start of the Uttarayana Punyakala, the auspicious period when the Sun begins its northward journey in the sky. Historically, Uttarayana has been regarded as a favorable time for positive change and renewal.
This four-day festival, also a celebration of winter harvest and Thanksgiving, is a time to express gratitude to the Sun, Bhagavan Shiva Surya, for the abundance of agriculture and the sustenance provided by our food.
KAILASAs worldwide celebrate this festival, symbolizing abundance and nourishment through traditional temple rituals and distributing free medicinal food to thousands.
